Sebs oust Vidyaloka to secure semi-final spot

Last year’s finalists St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa reached the semi-finals of the Inter School Under-15 Division I tournament with a 55-run victory over Vidyaloka College, Galle in the quarter-final played at Darley Road, COlombo on Saturday.

Sandun Nirosha and Bihanga Mendis shared five wickets between them to restrict the team from Galle to 163 runs.

Chasing 219 runs to win, Vidyaloka lost wickets at regular intervals and were on the verge of a huge defeat losing nine wickets for 112 runs before Sonal Ransara and Hansaka Jayanath delayed the inevitable with a tenth-wicket stand of 51 runs.

Ransara came to bat when they were five wickets down for 86 runs and scored five fours and four sixes in a knock of 86 runs which came off in 92 balls.

For the winners, Savindu Roshen was the standout batsman as he top-scored with 51 runs in 48 balls (7x4s). Bihanga Mendis, Sandesh Ruckshal and Sandun Nirosha contributed with valuable 30s.

St. Sebastian’s were the runners-up to Nalanda last year when the tournament used the two-day innings format. This year the limited-overs format is used for the ongoing knockout stage.

Defending champions Nalanda were defeated by Royal, Colombo in the pre-quarterfinals.
