Western medical researchers have discovered 12 plants which could be grown in home gardens to ward off mosquitoes.

The plants are Citronella, Marigold, Lemongrass, Lavender, Peppermint, Rosemary, Basil, Petit Royal, Geranium, Horsemint and Ageratum Young.

Dr. Precilla Samawaweera, Epidemic specialist said since Citronella, Marigold and Lavender were endemic to Sri Lanka, those plants could be used as natural mosquito repellents.

She advised the public to apply citronella oil on their bodies between 6.00 and 9 a.m. and 4.00 and 6 p.m. when the dengue mosquitoes were active. She also said as a dengue prevention measure it was advisable to use mosquito nets, wear long sleeved light coloured dresses and refrain from scratching the surface stung by mosquitoes.
