The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) yesterday accused the Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne of attempting to hoodwink the public by claiming that the takeover of the Neville Fernando Teaching Hospital (NFTH) would help resolve the issues surrounding the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM).

Addressing the media in Colombo, Assistant Secretary Dr Naveen D. Zoysa said the NFTH had been acquired by the government on lease.

Dr Zoysa said doctors were not prepared to provide clinical training to students of SAITM as the institution had not been approved by the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC).

GMOA Secretary, Dr Haritha Aluthge alleged that the Health Minister was also attempting to derail Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe’s efforts to resolve the SAITM issue. At present the union was holding discussions with representatives of the PM. Dr. Aluthge said Minister Senaratne had been spreading falsehoods regarding the ongoing discussions in an attempt to advance his own agenda.

Dr. Aluthge alleged that the minister was also attempting to set up a new doctors’ union to counter the GMOA.

The GMOA Central Committee would meet on Sunday (23) to discuss the issues and the latest development regarding the talks with the Prime Minister, he said.
