Sri Lanka Customs recently detected a Colombo businessman attempting to smuggle two 20 foot containers containing banned weedicide Glyphosate in 160 drums each and labelling the contents as ‘Non Iconic’.
A senior customs officer said "Doubts were raised as there was no such item called ‘Non Ionic’ which prompted them to examine the contents.
He said import of Glyphosate was banned by the Finance Minister under the Extraordinary Gazette Notification 1918/22 of November June 2015 and also the Registrar of Pesticides cancelled pesticides including Glyphosate by Extraordinary Gazette Notification 1937/35 of October 23,2015.
