Roy de Silva passes awayJanuary 10, 2017, 9:41 pm
The death of Roy de Silva, one of the most prominent sports personalities in Kandy has cast a poll of gloom among sports fans in Kandy.
Roy was a product of Kingswood where he excelled in Hockey, inter alia. He was a live wire of the Sri Lanka Hockey Federation and represented Kandy District for many years at the Hockey Nationals.
His chief claim to fame, however, was as the chairman of the National Olympic Committee. He had a long stint in that post and it was his good fortune that he was able to represent Sri Lankan at a few Olympic Games.
Outside Hockey, Roy had a great interest in cricket and served in the Kandy District and Central Province Committees. In his short stint as President KDCA, he steered the ship well in stormy times.
Roy was the President of the Kandy Club and it is a tribute to his competent stewardship that he was re-elected to that post year after year.
He leaves behind his wife Chandrika and two sons, both of whom are in the USA.
Roy’s funeral will take place at the Mahaiyawa Crematorium today (Wednesday) at 6.00 p.m.
He was eighty years old at the time of his death.
