A contempt of court application filed against SLPP MP and State Minister for water Supply Sanath Nishantha will be taken up today before the Court of Appeal.

The petitioner is Attorney-at-Law Priyalal Sirisena.

The petition has alleged that lawmaker Nishantha at a media briefing held on August 22 made a statement derogatory of the Magistrate’s Court. He referred to the alleged issue of keeping him in remand for two weeks over the Galle Face violence of 09 May 2022, while other protesters were bailed out forthwith.

The contempt of court petition by Attorney-at-Law says the comment by Sanath Nishantha is not correct and he should be ordered by the Court of Appeal to explain why he should not be punished for contempt.

This case was previously scheduled to be called on Monday last week, which was declared a public holiday on account of the Queen Elizabeth’s funeral.

President’s Counsel Upul Jayasuriya appears for the petitioner Sirisena.

The bench will comprise Justice Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne and Justice R. Gurusinghe.
